Illuminata

I am an Italian-American, a lesbian, a lawyer, a professor, an ovarian cancer survivor, but most of all an artist. For me art serves as bridge to our higher selves, a connection to the divine, and a life source that goes beyond our physical mortality. Without art I am nonexistent, with art I am boundless.

My submission to the 4th International Art Award of the Angel Orensanz Foundation consists primarily of a painting entitled Illuminata. This painting is part of a series of works, which is still evolving and presently consists of paintings, drawings and photography, sharing the common theme of my experience as a cancer survivor. The works are designed to be accessible to all those whose lives have been touched by cancer either directly or indirectly; to help raise awareness among those who have not been touched by cancer; and, to give tribute and respect to those who have died of cancer.

Illuminata is intended to serve as my contribution to art’s higher role of transcendence and luminescence, to serve as a vehicle for deeper introspection and connection to our inner spirit and to God. Reflected in Illuminata is the range of emotions I felt when undergoing chemotherapy. They included fear, vulnerability, sadness and uncertainty. The painting is raw and haunting in its expression of these emotions. It is confrontational, affording the viewer no escape but to be trapped between two difficult foci for contemplation. However, with its symbolism, lighting and background color, Illuminata also represents personal transformation, a rite of passage, hope, faith, renascence, illumination and innocence.
