The Angel Orensanz Foundation is a twenty year old institution that fosters some of the most creative events in literature, contemporary classic music, dance, opera, and art preservation in the City. Besides this award the Foundation produces the quarterly magazine “Artscape”; a weekly telecast “Arts from the Orensanz” on Time Warner, channel 34 at 9 PM; and an educational program for school youths.

The award has a successful history of bringing to New York new art from all over the world. This present edition convenes 30 artists from ten countries; and its main characteristic is the use of the internet in all levels of the award: to create the pieces, to present them, to involve the jury and to make this art available worldwide. Manhattan Borough Virginia Field will close the event by granting a Certificate of Merit to the Award and its parent organization, the Angel Orensanz Foundation.

The address of C. Virginia Field’s office is: 1 Center Street, 19th f. New York, NY 1007. Tel. (212) 669-3736

Message
FROM
THE ANGEL ORENSANZ FOUNDATION CENTER OF THE ARTS
NEW YORK CITY

We invited a selected group of artists to submit work in digital format that develop concepts related to the tension between chaos and order; decadence and renaissance; destruction and reconstruction; oppression and liberation.

In mid June of 2002 several members of our Foundation attended the opening of the 39th Biennale of Venice. We were both surprised and excited to see how the digital image had become the lingua franca of the art world. I remember meeting one afternoon at the Osteria de l’Angelo, on the shadow of the Piazza San Marco, with Pierre Restany and Angel Orensanz. We were commenting on the various pavilions. Restany raised his eyes, plucked his long beard and pronounced the replacement of the pictorial and sculptural imagery by the digital one.. He saw in the advent of the video images, the biotech revolution and the space travel the treshhold of a new humankind. I do not think that all assembled there agreed with the pronouncements of the French intellectual at the occasion that proved to be his final farewell to Venice.

With the 4th International Angel Orensanz Foundation Art Awards we have tried to establish an (almost) totally digital art project. We built this site with the guidelines, an invitation to submit work, scope of the competition and we present it now to the public asking them to cast their votes by sending an e-mail to contact@orensanzaward.com with their choice of the most accomplished artwork .

As a consequence of our online call for submission we have 28 formal entries from eight countries, with a majority coming from the USA, and with a surprisingly strong Hispanic component.

The artists have submitted digital files with images that in a broad sense deal with decay and recovery, destruction and reconstruction. We also asked them to submit a statement and a bio. In most cases, our office helped the artists to format and to technically define their submissions. Beyond the virtual presentation on the website, we also want to make the artworks available for viewing to the public in New York starting the 26th of April until the 3rd of May, projected on the walls of our space, and made also available in a CD/catalogue format.. Then the project will travel to Venice and Paris to be presented to the public in those cities .

This digital gallery will stay open for two years through our web pages. We have substituted the printed catalogue by the thin plexiglass case and we have gone a step forward in the digitalization of the art proceedings and procedures. We have invited a jury of distinguished scholas and art critics from New York to submit their votes based on their examination of the electronic files that our web site carries and to return their vote via e-mail. Klara Palotai and Paul Cabezas, the two people involved in the handling of the award in all steps, in a final act of duty will collect the e-mail votes of the jury and in a separate category the votes of the online viewers who cast their votes.

The sociologists at the turn of the twentieth century note with surprise that people change faster their inclinations than their habits. That’s why, this first digital exhibtion still convened all the participants and their families and friend to come to an opening to a sort of campfire celebration to warm up, out of the silent solitude of their studios, with lively conversation and reassuring ambiance.

We truly hope you take the time to visit the award participants' individual webspages and e-mail us your comments and you even come to our real site, in the heart of Lower Manhattan since 1849.
